Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982, using the 924 as a starting point but radically improving the car in many areas. This included ditching the old VW engine and replacing it with a new 2.5-litre straight-four that was effectively half of the 5.0-litre V8 in the 928 supercar. Producing 163bhp and with bags of torque, it could propel the 944 to 137mph.

In mid-1985 the 944 underwent its first significant changes, including a new oval dash and door panels, upgraded alternator, increased oil sump capacity, new front and rear cast alloy control and semi-trailing arms, larger fuel tank, powered seats and revisions to the transaxle mountings to reduce noise and vibration. The ‘Cookie Cutter’ wheels used in the early 944s were upgraded to new ‘Phone Dial’ style alloys.

With its front engine, rear transaxle layout, the 944 was a fabulously well-balanced machine that had the measure of the contemporary 911 in many respects. In the nine years of production, over 160,00 were sold, making it the best-selling Porsche at the time.

This lovely ‘oval dash’ 944 Lux Automatic was bought new by our vendor’s father in February 1988 when he was resident in Guernsey. The original purchase invoice shows that it cost £22,414 including Zermatt Silver paintwork; Burgundy pinstripe cloth upholstery and door card inserts; removable sunroof panel with electric tilt; front foglights; automatic transmission and deletion of the catalytic converter.

It came to mainland UK in December 1992 and has been looked after by Porsche specialists Two Plus Two of Brierley Hill ever since. It has covered only 55,100 miles with 8 stamps in the Porsche service book, the last at 54,250 miles in May 2023, plus various supporting invoices and interesting correspondence paperwork.

From 2013 – 2022 it was mainly kept tucked away in a nice dry garage so the service in May 2023 was also something of a recommissioning job which included a Full Mobil 1 Oil change a new cam belt and balance shaft belt and tensioners; brake system overhaul; new gas struts for the bonnet plus numerous other minor items.

In November 2023 it got a new set of Vredestein tyres for the MOT (which erroneously stated the mileage as 56,564 rather than 54,564) and it has only covered 500 miles since. The current MOT is valid until February 2026. The V5C records three former keepers, all with the same surname (father, mother, son).

In June 2025 she was treated to a paint work rectifcation on the still immaculate body where necessary, the alloy wheels fully powder coated, a new gear stick gator and full Lano guard protection to the underside.

The electric tilt roof, electric windows , radio and central locking are all fully functioning.

The 944 is such an everyday usable classic that it is hard to find one with less than 100k miles on the clock. This low mileage beauty, cherished by just one family for its entire 37 years to date.
